What is a SCADA system?
SCADA means Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. It refers to a system where most control is handled at the local level by the PLC but where overriding commands may be sent remotely by an operator.
Sometimes the acronym SCADA is used informally to mean the network that interconnects the PLCs, the HMI, the PC and other intelligent devices.
The SCADA system relies upon communication links which might vary from simple modems accessing data across phone lines to radio links and satellite communications. In a true SCADA system, if the communication system fails, the local PLC will continue to run the process—the SCADA system provides supervisory control only.
